Rifle
193
Rifle No. 4 Mk 2. Fazakerley, 1953. In 1881 Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed
himself the Mahdi, who, according to Muslim tradition, would rid the
world of evil. He led a rebellion in 1882, annihilating an Egyptian
army and capturing Khartoum in 1885 to win control of the province.
Meanwhile, Egypt had become a virtual possession of Great Britain.
In 1896 British and Egyptian troops invaded Sudan and established joint
sovereignty. In 1953 Egypt and Britain agreed to self-determination
for Sudan. An order for 2,500 rifles (serial number range PF301548-PF304070)
was placed while the “Sudanization” program placed Sudanese
in government and military positions. Meanwhile, political unrest grew
rapidly. The country formally achieved independence in 1956; the government
was overthrown in 1958 (a Sudanese tradition that continues to this
day). The 2,500 rifles were never delivered. Overall condition 98%
finish. Bore is exceptionally sharp and bright (virtually unfired).
Wood appears unissued. All matching - bolt, receiver, forestock, and
magazine. With matching serial number bayonet. No import marks. Very
rare item in exceptional condition. |
