Berkshire Regiment
Founded
25th December 1743 as Edward Trelawney's Regiment of Foot from eight
independent companies raised in Jamaica and popularly known then
as the Jamaica Volunteers. Redesignated in 1816 as 49th (Princess
Charlotte of Wale's) Regiment of Foot; in 1881 renamed 1st Btn, (Princess
Charlotte of Wale's) Berkshire Regiment; "Royal" added in 1885.
Great Britain entered World War One on 12th August 1914. The
1st Btn of the Royal Berkshire Regiment arrived
in France/Flanders the very next day and served there throughout the
Great War; posted to Mesopotamia (Iraq) 1919-1920; then North Persia
(Iran) 1920-1921;
served in India
1921-1925 in Waziristan during the uprising. 2nd Btn arrived
France/Flanders Nov 1914 from India; served 1919-1922 Ireland through the troubles
until Irish independence. 3rd - 6th Btns served in
France/Flanders. 7th
Btn sent from France in 1915 to Salonika, Greece to aid the Serbs and
Greeks against the Ottoman Turks. Sent to the Caucasus 1919 to aid the White
(Royalist) Russians against the Red (Bolshevik) Russians. 8th Btn arrived
France/Flanders August 1915 and lost 24 of 25 officers and over half the Btn
during the fighting at Loos 25th Sept 1915.
