Circular No.3 - April 2007

Greetings!!

Thank you for signing up for the List-of-Changes newsletter @ Enfield-Stuff.  The purpose of this page is to pass on Enfield-related information and links that you might be interested in that may or may not get posted on the website.  Subscribers to this newsletter will also have at least a week's advance notice of any rifles or bayonets that I have for sale. You'll be the first to know, and you'll see it at least a week before anything is posted on the website.

FOR SALE
Yes, I finally got some rifles and bayonet descriptions put together.  I plan on thinning out about 15-20 rifles over the next couple of months.  A few years ago I picked up a collection of fifty or so regimentally marked bayonets; the vast majority will be looking for new homes so I can concentrate on regimentally marked rifles.  You can click here to view the preview page or copy and paste this link into your browser:

Note: the Preview page will be taken down 27th April and any items not spoken for will be moved to the regular For Sale pages.

MUTTERRINGS
Windows Vista is driving me nuts.  OK, it's actually the latest Internet Explorer that is driving me nuts.  If the web pages here suddenly look like they're broken up and the pictures don't quite line up with the text, it's because IE v7.0.6 doesn't like some of my layouts (IE v7.0.5 is OK.  Go figure).  New version of Enfield-Stuff website is in the works.  As soon as I can teach myself some new coding skills. Like I had nothing else to do. Grrrr.

IS IT REAL?    OR IS IT A FAKE?
OK, so you've just plunked down some serious cash for a P1907 Quillion bayonet. Or, even better, a regimentally marked P1907 Quillion bayonet. So you start doing a little research and you notice the date - Jan 1912. Edward VII (ER) died in May 1910. His successor, George V, was crowned in June 1911. But your bayonet is stamped ER and dated 1912.  That sudden churning in your gut is the feeling you get when you wonder if you've just laid down a lot of good money on fake bayonet.
So, is it real?    Or is it a fake?    Answer

Hell in the Holy Land: WWI in the Middle East; David Woodward, University of Kentucky Press, 2006. Other than romantic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Lighthorsemen, the campaigns in Egypt and Palestine are often dismissed as an unimportant "sideshow" to the Western Front. One gets the impression that if T.E. Lawrence didn't single-handedly defeat the Turks, then the stout-hearted Australians' hell-for-leather cavalry charge at Beersheba certainly did. This is the story of the Territorials and the Yeomanry, the cavalry of the Territorial Force, told with archives, letters and diaries to describe in detail the daily struggle with flies, heat, unruly camels, boredom and sand while dealing with a tough and tenacious Ottoman Turk foe. It's a great read on the Territorials and Yeomanry.
